You have a wheelnut that is cross-threaded - what to do and how to prevent it?

Many people will have had to deal with cross-threaded nuts at one time or another in their lives. However, having a problem with your wheel nut is quite irritating. Yet, it’s something that frequently occurs, especially if you take your vehicle to a shop where entry-level mechanics are training. Whether they have used an impact socket that’s not the right size and rounded off the lug nut or they used a power impact gun without screwing it in by hand first, you are now left with a wheel nut that’s cross threaded.

What's a cross threaded wheel nut?

Cross-threaded wheel bolts and nuts can cause a problem by cutting new threads. The wheel nut that’s cross threaded won’t hold the right amount of torque and can create more noise or vibration. It can even lead to a broken stud that won’t hold the wheel on. 

The threads must fit snugly around the cylinder. If the wedge is pushed apart, or put together incorrectly, new threads will form. If the bolt and nut diameter doesn’t match the thread pitch, the threads become crossed. 

What happens when a wheel nut is cross-threaded?

To work properly, the bolt or nut should be placed at an appropriate angle. You should mate it with the appropriate axis.

It will cause interference if it's inserted at an awkward angle. The awkward angle can not only create new threads but also cause damage to both the housing and the entry. 

2. Worst Thread pitch

A particular size combination of lug nuts and wheel studs is used by every car. Most vehicles use 12 mm x 1.25” or 20 mm x 1.5”.

By using pieces that don’t match, you are forcing a connection that shouldn’t exist. You create new threads between the parts. 

3. You can damage or remove debris

The wheel nut cylinder should never contain dirt or debris, but it’s susceptible to these contaminants. It’s also possible that the stud is inserted with this debris attached.

New threads can be created by dirt being inserted in the hole. The dirt and contaminants can rub onto the threads, cutting new threads.

How to restore damaged threads

When trying to repair damaged threads, some people prefer to use a kit called a rethreader. This kit can come in handy and includes everything needed to finish the task. A rethreading kit can be used if the bolts are old and rusted.

Work on the thread using the attached file. This allows you to restore the original condition. You can also repair damaged threads with the aid of cutting fluid. You will need to determine the diameter. Once you're satisfied with the diameter, move the tap clockwise to return the threads back to the original state. 

A special ratchet must be attached to the sleeve if you need to repair the bolt's head if it is cross-threaded. You should be able repair the bolt's head by moving counterclockwise. 

Sometimes, the threads may be so worn that they need to be replaced or the entire bearing.

Cross Threaded Wheel Nuts are to be avoided

1. Make sure to keep your threads clean

This is the best thing you can do, as dirt and other debris are a major factor in cross-threads. You should clean any fasteners thoroughly before you attach them.

Use a wire brush or spray solvent to clean each surface. You must let it dry, as torque specifications require that the entire assembly be dry. If there is some lubrication needed, you may be able to use a small amount of engine oil, but this isn’t always recommended. 

2. Repair Any Damage

Repairing issues as soon as they appear is crucial. If you notice thread damage, it’s possible to repair it before it becomes a major issue. 

In fact, thread damage doesn’t always mean that a replacement is necessary. With the right tools (such as a tap-and-die set or threaded filing), you can fix many thread problems. 

3. Replace Defective Parts

If the damage is too bad, or you’ve let it go too long, you might not be able to repair the threading. All auto parts eventually need to be replaced.

If the threads aren’t repairable, it’s time to replace them. To achieve the best fit, replace your lug nuts and wheel studs.

4. Align Bolts

It doesn’t matter what type of bolt you are attempting to secure, you should always be sure of the alignment first. Even a small oversight can lead to major problems.

Prior to putting any bolt in a hole, make sure you align them as well. To aid in alignment, you can use dowel pins and a drift punch. 

5. Start tightening your hand

Your hand is the best tool to open a bolt or nut. The bolt can be threaded with the assistance of your fingers.

You will notice issues as you thread them by hand before they become too severe. Thread them until the threads are smooth. This should be done across the entire board, until they are all in place. 

6. Reverse the process

Move backwards first as you tighten the bolts using your fingers. Your fastener should be turned counterclockwise, until it clicks.

This click will tell you when the thread is contacted. You can now turn the bolt or nuts clockwise once you have established that click. Once you have the click, it's safe to engage the threads. You can then turn the bolt or nut clockwise and start spinning them by hand. This takes longer, but it protects the hardware.
