There are so many options, but how can you choose the right one for your car? It’s important to determine – what is HOAT coolant and how does it differ from OAT?

What exactly is HOAT Coolant, and how can I use it?

Hybrid Organic Acid Technology, or HOAT is Hybrid OAT. This coolant mix is OAT (Organic Acid Technology), and IAT (Inorganic Acid Technology). Although it's usually yellow-colored, it can be found in blue, pink and turquoise. 

HOAT coolant includes silicates to provide additional protection from rusting and corrosion. It’s meant for newer cars, with some of the top manufacturers recommending it. You should flush this coolant every 100,000 miles. It has a longer service life than other coolants. 

HOAT antifreeze will often be labeled with terms like G-05, G-11, G-12 and Global and you need to check your owner’s manual to see which type your car requires. HOAT antifreeze is available in many automobiles, such as Volkswagen, Ford Volvo, Mercedes Benz and Audi, KIA Hyundai, Nissan Honda, Toyota and others.

What is Coolant?

Coolant can be found in a variety of alcohols. The mono propylene glycol solution is a synthetic option that has no color, is odorless and doesn’t taste like anything. It’s the main ingredient in many popular coolants and is also used with other industrial products. The safer option of both and it is non-toxic. The boiling point for this alcohol is 370 degrees Fahrenheit. It has a freezing point at -74 degrees.

Another alcohol found in coolants, monoethylene glycol. It's colorless and has a pleasant taste. Plus, it’s extremely toxic. It has an 8-degree freezing point and a 400-degree boiling point. 

These alcohol solutions can be mixed with water in the right proportions to increase the engine's freezing and boiling point. It will keep coolant fluids from freezing under cold conditions. However, it can also be used to absorb heat from motors in order to avoid overheating. Like other liquids it prevents corrosion. 

The purpose of the HOAT Coolant

HOAT cooler is used to cool the engine. It works the same way as other coolants. This solution flows through the channels of the engine to dissipate the heat that’s produced by the motor. It’s needed to perform well in a variety of engine temperatures.

Because of the special hybrid engineering, HOAT coolant also helps to keep rust from occurring and it’s also protective against corrosion. It works in both low and high temperatures. It has a much longer service life than other coolants. You can use it for as long as five years, or 100,000 miles, without worrying about degrading.

While this is much longer than IAT coolant, it’s not as effective as OAT. However, it provides better corrosion protection, so it's the best option.

Manufacturers may recommend adding special additives to the system in certain cases, such as when HOAT has been used. These additives can include silicates (phosphates), nitrates or molybdates.

For maximum efficiency, it may be necessary to increase the amount of coolant every 25,000 km. However, don’t ever mix HOAT coolant with IAT or OAT solutions. You are prohibited from adding any additional to the mixture of OAT and IAT coolants. You could lose some of the benefits that HOAT offers. 

There are differences between OAT Coolant and HOAT Coolant

1. The color of the sky

One of the most striking differences between them is their colors. The most common color for HOAT is yellow but it can be found in other colors such as purple, blue and pink.

OAT coolant will almost always be orange. IAT coolant, on the other hand, is more often going to appear green.

2. Lifetime

It’s clear that the HOAT coolant has an exceptionally long lifetime. The coolant can be used for up to five years and 100,000 miles before it needs to be replaced.

OAT coolant can last even longer. It’s designed for up to ten years or 150,000 miles. HOAT is limited in its lifespan due to the fact that it's mixed with IAT. IAT needs to be replaced every two years. HOAT can only last for 30,000 miles. HOAT is able to protect against corrosion for a longer time than IAT, even though it has a shorter life span.

3. Prices

OAT and HOAT will cost more than IAT. The cheaper option is HOAT.

A gallon of HOAT cooling fluid could cost you $30. OAT gallons can cost anywhere from $50 to $65. 

You can find out the best prices for these coolant types online. You might need to wait for a while to obtain the coolant but the savings are well worth it. Be wary of sellers who claim to have too much coolant. You don’t want to put any sub-par fluid into your car, or you might face bigger problems down the road. 

How to choose the best coolant for you car

The color of coolant in an existing system was once the driver's primary consideration. These days, this isn’t a great way to choose a coolant. There are many coolants that come in different colors so it is important to only rely on the facts. Additionally, when you purchase your coolant, read the label carefully to ensure you’ve chosen the right kind.

If you don’t know what coolant your car uses, reference the owner’s manual. This manual will tell you what fluid to use for regular maintenance. If you don’t have the owner’s manual, you might be able to find a pdf file online. To get more details, contact your nearest dealership. While the owner’s manual is going to recommend an OEM formula, you should be able to find a comparable aftermarket version if you prefer.
