To put your car on a dyno machine, you won’t spend less than about $150. Most shops will charge you by the hour. You can rent the machine either for half or full days, depending on your needs.

Standalone ECU tuning is the most costly option. This involves a complete setup, Dyno testing, and street tuning. Tuning a carburetor can be expensive because it requires the technician to adjust the timing curve, idle circuit and pump shot. 

On the other end of the spectrum, it’s also possible to dyno tune a bike. The price of motorcycle tuning is different than that for a car.

Dyno Tune Checklist - How to Prepare

1. Belts/Hoses

When you are ready to tune the engine, take the time to inspect the condition of the belts and hoses. If there’s anything worn or damaged, you want to replace it now. 

The process of Dyno tuning is exhausting on every system. A weak belt or broken hose can cause damage. You don't want to have to deal with a broken belt or burst pipe during an expensive session.

2. Spark Plugs

If your spark plugs aren’t new, you are missing out on valuable performance. It is important to have high-quality plugs installed and should be properly spaced.

It is important to check the oil, fuel, and air filters during this tune-up. During testing, you want your engine to perform at its best. 

3. Tires

Because most people think about the engine, the tires can be overlooked in the Dyno Tuning process. To get readings, tires must be in contact with rollers. 

If your tires are worn, the traction won’t be good and your results could be skewed. You don’t want to pop a tire during dyno testing. You can also choose the hub-dyno variant. In this version, you don't need to remove the tires.

Are Dyno-Tunes Worth It?

Dyno tuning will optimize your car's performance. For this reason, it’s a great choice if you need more acceleration or are looking to tune your car for the track. The car can be tuned to increase horsepower, torque or fuel economy. 

But, it's not essential for all people to have this additional power. For the cost, it doesn’t make sense to dyno tune a daily commuter, especially if it’s a stock car and isn’t high-performance to begin with.
