There are many 4-wheel steering options available in vehicles and trucks. All-wheel steering isn’t something that’s new, but it seems to be more popular in recent years. 

This unique technology is explained in detail to help you better understand it. A few brands offer four-wheel steering. 

Is 4-Wheel Steering a thing?

A 4-wheel, or all-wheel steering permits the rear wheels to rotate with the front while the driver steers the wheel. While four-wheel driving is commonly confused with fourwheel steering, they are actually two completely separate systems.

Four-wheel drive means that the vehicle transmits power to all four wheels. The four-wheel steering, on the other hand allows you to move the steering wheel and turn all four wheels. 

All-wheel steering is used to increase vehicle agility. The rear wheels will turn slightly opposite to the front when the vehicle is moving at a slow speed. Counter-phase steering refers to this tactic. This allows the vehicle to have a smaller turning radius which results in greater agility. 

The rear wheels will turn slightly in the opposite direction when traveling at higher speeds. In-phase steering is the name for this motion. This motion is used to give the vehicle more stability and allow for better cornering. Because both the axles will share the torque, this means that the vehicle is less inclined when corners are taken.

The 4-wheel steering allows you to turn the vehicle in a more precise way with less radius. The rear wheels rotate opposite to the front because lower speeds cause counter-phase steering.

Daily commuters on the highway spend lots of time switching lanes. For this reason, the four-wheel steering arrangement is ideal.

2. Higher Prices

These advanced systems will make your vehicle more expensive. You pay more for an automaker that spends more time developing the system or manufacturing it.

These costs will also increase if your system has to be fixed. That’s because many of the systems are built with high-tech parts.

Acura is part of Honda's luxury division. This automaker offers four-wheel steering as well as a wide range of vehicles.

Acura RLX includes these sophisticated systems. It is an option on the Acura TLX.

2. Audi

Audi, which belongs to Volkswagen Group is known for its precision engineering. That’s why it should come as no surprise that the company offers four-wheel steering.

These systems are available with the Audi A6, Audi A7 and Audi A8. It is also available for the Audi Q7, a popular SUV.

3. BMW

BMW, a German company, is expected to offer high-tech features such as all-wheel driving. As one of the first to offer many of these systems, the technology doesn’t disappoint.

The BMW 5 Series models, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series have advanced steering. You can also get it with the BMW X5 luxury SUV. 

4. GM

American companies often fall behind others in technology, even though they are a brand. However, GM hasn’t dropped the ball on this one.

Only a handful of models are available with four-wheel steering. They are still trucks. The advanced technology is available to Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. 

5. Ferrari

This list includes Ferrari. The company is known for creating superior race cars, which perform at high levels.

Two popular Ferrari models offer four-wheel steering. For some thrilling thrills, drive the Ferrari 812 Superfast oder the Ferrari F12 

6. Honda

Honda hasn’t been big on using this technology in recent years. In fact, you won’t find it included with today’s lineup.

To find a 4WD model, however, it is possible to search the inventory of pre-owned cars. You can find this technology in a Honda Accord used car or Honda Prelude.

7. Infiniti

Even though Infiniti is a luxury brand, part of the Nissan family, you aren’t going to find the 4-wheel steering on any new cars. This is a sign that the automaker has abandoned this technology many years ago.

You can also find it in used cars if you look hard enough. This was part of some Infiniti Q45 models. 

8. Lamborghini

There isn't anything that a Lamborghini doesn't have. This supercar comes with all the performance features you can want including four-wheel steering.

Two popular models are available if you want maximum power and excellent handling. You can take the Lamborghini Aventador and Lamborghini Huracan to your destination.

9. Lexus

Toyota and Lexus share many of the same technology, such as all-wheel steering. The Lexus GS is a great choice if you're looking for a used model.

You can still find this technology on the Lexus LC 500 models. This system doesn’t just provide a more engaging ride but helps this luxury coupe outperform the competition. 

10. Mazda

You can see some of the most popular Mazda models with all-wheel steering. These systems are designed to give the car a sporty look. 

Mazda 929: A mid-sized car, this Mazda 929 offers an agile ride and is our first choice. The Mazda RX-7 was however the true winner of the Mazda 929, which has a sporty design and unique feeling. 

11. Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi might be focused on creating low-dollar automobiles these days, but that wasn’t always the case. Mitsubishi was once known for making high-quality vehicles with the most recent technologies. 

Search used car lots to find two of the most iconic Mitsubishi models. Both the Mitsubishi 3000GT (and Mitsubishi Galant VR-4) were available with rear-wheel steering. 

12. Nissan 

Nissan models come with sophisticated steering systems. Nissan is known for creating superior drifting and race cars.

You can take a look at the pre-owned Nissan 300ZX equipped with four-wheel steering. A Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R is another option.

13. Porsche 

It’s tough to find a vehicle as beautifully engineered as the Porsche. You can get an upgrade steering system from Porsche no matter which vehicle type you have. 

Porsche 911, Porsche 991, and Porsche 911 offer sport car-like driving pleasures. For a more professional ride, the Porsche Cayenne (or Porsche Panamera) is a better choice. 

14. Toyota 

Just like with Lexus, you won’t find four-wheel steering on today’s Toyota models. There are however two models that offer the system, and they're very popular.

This option was once available on the best-selling Toyota Camry. It was also included in the Toyota Celica to enhance handling.
