How to program a transponder key without an original

These are the steps you need to follow in order to program your transponder keys without using the original key. You may require more sophisticated diagnostic tools for some models. This program will not work with all car types. These steps can be done for free so that you don't have to call your dealer.

  1. You can turn the ignition on

Sit in the driver’s seat and put the key in the ignition. Move the ignition switch to ON. Turn on the security light.

If you don’t see the security light, there might be a problem with the car battery. If the battery is low, check it and recharge it.

To ensure that the voltage is stable during the entire process, use a car charger.

  2. Wait

For at least 15 minutes, the security light should remain on. You must not disturb the security system for more than fifteen minutes in order to program the key.

Set a timer, and then walk away. You can achieve many things in the 15 minutes you spend waiting.

  3. You can switch off and go on

Once you’ve waited 15 minutes, the security light should go off. Within three minutes, the security light will go off.

Then turn the key so that it is in the OFF position. Once again, the security lamp will stay on for 15 more minutes.

  4. Keep repeating the steps

After approximately fifteen minutes, your security light will come on once more. Repeat the steps from the previous step. Now turn off the key and switch it on again.

The security light should now be lit again. It is possible that you are getting tired. You can wait another 15 minutes. You should complete this step once more.
You should have the key generated after 45 minutes.
Make sure the car starts by testing the key. The original key won't work anymore. If you happen to find it after programming a new key, it’s no longer going to work.

What vehicles use transponder keys?

Practically every new car currently on the marketplace has a transponder-key. This technology is used by all major manufacturers, such as Chevy, Ford and Nissan. Transponder keys are also used by luxury carmakers, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. They can be found with Audi, Genesis, Genesis, and BMW models.

You might need one if your vehicle is older. Ford first introduced transponder technology to more costly models in 1996, but it was slowly integrated across all vehicles over the years. All 2001 Ranger pickups had transponder key access. The transponder keys were also included in the F-150 1999-2003.

The 1998 Wrangler was the first Jeep Wrangler to have the transponder keys as an option. It wasn’t until 2007 that the Wrangler came standard with the transponder.

How do you know if your transponder key is working?

1. The Key Database

Check with your dealer to find out if you possess a transponder. Another option is to contact a locksmith, who has a complete list of different car keys.

The dealership will give you the information you need to determine which type of key you have. Both of these people can help you get a new key.

2. Security Light

If your vehicle has a transponder key, there will be a security light on the car’s dashboard. In some vehicles, the light is showing a picture of a lock, but it could also be a key or provide the letters “sec.” You might see this security light on the dashboard.

The security light flashes when the vehicle is turned on. If the transponder keys are working properly, the security lights will flash immediately. The transponder will still flash if it needs to be programmed.

3. Identification

Your key should have an identification number printed with numbers and letters. The identification code for the key is this. This code is used for key research.

The transponder key also comes with an embedded chip. You can determine whether a transponder has been included by looking at the plastic head. It will be bigger than an ordinary mechanical key. You can also research your vehicle's model to determine if it needs a transponder.

4. It is possible to test

Special equipment is available for locksmiths. If you can’t get to the bottom of what kind of key you have, take it for testing.

The machinery can identify if there’s a transponder included or not. Plus, the locksmith can help you get it programmed if you don’t want to mess with it.

Replacement cost for transponder key

Each car model requires its own key. However, the cost of a standard key could range from $125 to $300. It is possible to purchase the key only and program it yourself.

If you don't want the trouble, you might prefer to have your car programmed. You can save some money by hiring a locksmith to do the job.

Most Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have the ability to duplicate a transponder-key?

It depends on what type of transponder you have whether or not you can copy the key. You may not be able to copy a transponder key if it is a fixed one. However, there are other types of keys that can be copied. You can have your car's locksmith check your keys and make a duplicate if it is.

You can start a car even if you don't have a transponder.

No. Transponder keys contain a tiny chip that sends a signal to the car’s immobilizer, telling it that the key is legitimate. If the car doesn’t receive a signal from the key, it won’t start.

Do you know of a way around a transponder-key bypass?

The type and sophistication of your vehicle's transponder and immobilizer systems will determine whether or not you are able to bypass the transponder. A frequency scanner can be used to attempt to collect the signal from your key fob, and send it to your car. While this can work, there's no guarantee it will work on every vehicle.

What's the difference between a chip and transponder key?

A chip key and a transponder key are both the same key type, although they have different names. Transponder keys contain a chip which sends an immobilizer a signal to begin the car. It is called a Chip Key.
