1. The Serial Number is located here

First, the serial number will be required in order to determine the exact value of the catalytic convertor. Some cats don't have serial numbers. The EPA requires that all newer cars have a catalytic converter, but the manufacturers aren’t required to put a serial number on it.

Locate Catalytic Convert Serial Number

1. GM

General Motors labeled all catalytic converters in the same manner across its entire line, regardless of whether they were a Chevy or GMC. The serial code is eight numbers on most plates.

However, it could also be just a few numbers, starting with “GM.” In this case, it would look something like – GM 115.

2. Chrysler/Dodge

Chrysler and Dodge don’t follow a uniform pattern of labeling catalytic converters. However, you should be able to find it stamped by the cat’s edging. 

It may be longer in some instances, like CLLC524AEB. It can be as simple as 8H, but it happens in other cases.

3. Subaru 

Subaru typically has two downpipe units. You can find the serial number listed on the cat’s body. 

The listing will include five characters. In most cases, it will look something like OFCA 2. 

4. Ford

Ford usually labels catalytic converters with a larger serial number. The cat should have a code between 10-12 characters.

This can contain a combination of letters and numbers separated by a colon. It should look something like this – 3T51-4W133-CB.

5. Hyundai

Hyundai and Kia belong to the same automaker. As such, the labels on the catalytic convertors should be identical. The cat should have a serial number for both brands.

The majority of cat serial numbers consist between 3 and 10 characters. You can mix numbers with letters to create a serial number for your cat, like ABC, PTEE, or 12.

6. Volkswagen

Volkswagen uses a different method of labeling catalytic convertors. A mixture of 9 numbers and one or three letters can be found, separated by space.

The serial number might read, for example, 824 313 901 H. 

7. Aftermarket Cats

The catalytic converter may have been removed if you own a vehicle with modified exhaust. Although it is illegal to install a catalytic converter on a car with modified exhaust, you can still use other methods. 

An aftermarket exhaust will increase airflow and performance. The new converter should be labeled with some type of serial number, but it probably won’t follow the guidelines of most OEM cats. 

What affects the value of the catalytic converter?

Preparing Your Catalytic Converter for Scrap

1. Cut Off Exhaust Pipes

The exhaust pipes are located on both sides of the catalytic convert. These should be removed as closely as possible to the catalytic converter. 

A sawzall should be capable of cutting through the material. The yard might ask you to remove it if you don't want it cut.

2. Keep the Honeycomb in

You will notice a honeycomb structure as you look into the catalytic convertor. The exhaust fumes are filtered by this mesh-like portion. It is here that precious metals are found in order to produce a catalytic response.

You are effectively removing the valuable metals from your catalytic converter by removing the honeycomb. If you are looking to extract the most value, it is important to preserve this part. This part is often removed by novice scrappers who mistakenly believe it to be worthless.
