What exactly is the Honda FCW System and how does it work?

The FCW system is Honda’s forward-collision warning system. FCW, or forward-collision alert system uses sensors to warn you when a collision may be imminent. The sensors may include cameras, radars or lasers. The system sends an alert to drivers to warn them if a collision is likely.

It could come in the form of an alert, vibration at the wheel or visual warning. The car will brake automatically if it isn't responding to the alert, depending on what car model.

The driver must be able react to this warning and steer clear of an accident. Sometimes, the system may need to assist the driver by making gentle steering motions and braking to slow down speed.

What does FCW System Failed mean?

The “FCW System Failed” message means the forward-collision warning system has failed in your vehicle. FCW System alerts you when there is a danger of collision. If the system fails, you won’t be notified of a possible collision.

Common Honda models like the Honda Accord or Honda Odyssey often get the FCW System Failure message. It can be very alarming to receive the FCW System Failed message. There are many situations where it is possible to repair the problem.

FCW Sensor Failure Causes

1. Poor Weather

Bad weather is one of the biggest reasons why the FCW system crashes. The system could misunderstand extreme weather conditions as an accident and malfunction.

If this happens, pull over to the side and wait for the rain to clear. For the best system recovery, it is a good idea to turn the engine off for just a while.

2. Camera or sensor that isn't working properly

If you have driven on a muddy road or haven’t washed your car for a long time, it can cause the FCW system to fail. This error will be displayed on your dashboard if the radar or camera sensor becomes clogged with dirt and mud.

Clear the areas in front of camera and radar sensors.

3. Normal Wear

Like any part of a car, sensors will eventually wear out. That’s why it’s important to have the vehicle regularly inspected and looked at.

Maybe you can’t see any major damage to the sensors, but they still need to be replaced. Someone qualified to work with these advanced safety systems will know what’s going on.

4. Camera or sensor defect

It’s possible for the sensors or camera to fail prematurely or for no reason at all. The sensor may fail without your knowledge, even if you take care of it.

If the sensor or camera detects collisions that aren’t there or it fails and sends you a dashboard message, you want to have it looked at. You must fix the problem immediately to be safe.

5. Software malfunction

Sometimes it’s not the sensor that has failed but the software running it. The software that controls the FCW is vulnerable to error.

Some automakers may be able to provide an updated version. If it is not, the program will need to change.

6. Dominion of the Damage

If the FCW system is damaged, it can cause an error. If you’ve been in an accident, the sensors might have sustained damage that renders them inoperable.

It’s important to have the vehicle looked at after any collision, no matter how small it is. After getting the go-ahead from a mechanic you can start driving again.

The FCW Sensor is located where?

FCW sensors are available in different places on each make or model. You will find them in the front, as this is the place where collisions take place.

You will find the sensors near the headlights and in the grille. Cameras that are part of the system might be located near or on the windshield. You can get more information from the owner’s manual.

With the FCW System Failed message, Can I Drive?

We’ve discussed how important the FCW system is to your on-road safety. You are placing yourself and others in danger if it goes down. You won’t be alerted if there’s a possible collision up ahead, leaving you on your own to navigate the road.

While you can drive without the FCW system working, it’s best not to. It is best to have the FCW system repaired as soon as possible in order to protect everyone. We understand you may need to travel a bit to reach the service center. You will need to be patient and cautious as your vehicle is unprotected.

Honda FCW System Reset/Recalibration

FCW System Reset

Professionals with sophisticated scanners are required to reset advanced safety systems. Most code scanners aren’t able to reset the system and it can’t be done from the vehicle itself.

They will then use the calibrated tools they have to shut off the warning lamp. Once the problem is resolved, the light shouldn’t come back on.

There are some people who recommend that you reset your ECU so it can work by itself. You can do this by disengaging the battery from your vehicle for 30 minutes. However, we don’t recommend this method because of the inconvenience it can cause with other systems in your vehicle.

FCW System Recalibration

If you’ve had your windshield replaced or a front body part put on, you might need to have the FCW system camera recalibrated. You can get the system back up and running again with the aid of static or dynamic camera aim. Only professionals can perform this aiming procedure.

Specific targets must be identified by the camera according to factory instructions. Auto repair shops will apply the parking brake, turn off all DRLs, and then start the engine. It must also be done in a garage where natural light sources aren’t interfering.

FCW System Failure: Costs

The costs to fix the FCW system fault depend on what is needed. You may spend only $75 to clean the sensor. Major failures can quickly cost you up to $1500. This isn’t a cheap system to work with.

The problem is not only important, it also influences the cost of repairs. An economical, affordable car may not be as expensive to fix as one that is more costly. Some luxury brands also require specialist mechanics for these types of repairs. To work on the vehicle you have, it is best to go to a dealership that has been certified.

If you have the correct equipment, in certain cases you may be able perform repairs on your own. The scanner required to reset or recalibrate the system costs a lot and is not available for most homeowners. You might consider visiting a local repair shop to save your money.

Questions about the FCW System

My FCW light is on.

The FCW warning indicator is lit if your forward collision warning systems is not working properly. You will need to use a code scanner to scan trouble codes and then continue troubleshooting.

Is the FCW sensor in your area?

The FCW sensor is either a camera placed on top of the car’s windshield, or a radar sensor placed behind the lower grille in the front of the car. It all depends on what car you drive and which FCW system you use.

Are you able to disable the FCW System

Yes, you can turn off the FCW (forward collision warning) system if you’d like. Simply press the FCWOFF button on your instrument panel and hold it for 2 seconds. If you can’t find the button, check your owner’s manual. You will receive no visual or audible alerts when the FCW system has been turned off.

Which cars use the FCW System and which models?

There are many car brands with different types of radar collision systems, but the FCW (Forward-Collision Warning) System is Honda’s system. This means you will find the FCW system in most modern honda vehicles and you can also find it in other brands that use Honda’s system.
