What exactly is the Honda FCW System and how does it work?

The FCW system is Honda’s forward-collision warning system. FCW (Forward collision warning) uses sensors to detect if there is a collision. The sensors may include cameras, radars or lasers. If the system senses that there is a danger of collision, the alert will be sent to the driver.

It could come in the form of an alert, vibration at the wheel or a visual warning. Depending on which car model, if the driver does not respond to the message, then the car may brake automatically.

This warning should help the driver to be ready to respond and prevent an accident. Sometimes, the system can help by making gentle steering gestures and braking to decrease speed.

What does FCW System Failed mean?

The “FCW System Failed” message means the forward-collision warning system has failed in your vehicle. FCW System, an important safety device that warns you if a collision is likely, is essential. If the system fails, you won’t be notified of a possible collision.

Common Honda models like the Honda Accord or Honda Odyssey often get the FCW System Failure message. It can be very alarming to receive the FCW System Failed message. There are many situations where it is possible to repair the problem.

FCW Sensor Failure Causes

1. Unpleasing Weather

Bad weather is one of the biggest reasons why the FCW system crashes. The system could misinterpret extreme weather conditions as an accident and malfunction.

The only way out is to pull over, and then wait for the storm to pass. For the best system recovery, it is a good idea to turn the engine off for just a while.

2. Dirty Camera, Sensor

If you have driven on a muddy road or haven’t washed your car for a long time, it can cause the FCW system to fail. The camera and radar sensors will stop working if they are covered with dirt or mud. You will notice this error in your dashboard.

Make sure to clean your vehicle and the surrounding area before the radar or camera.

3. Normal Wear

These sensors, like any other car component can become worn over time. That’s why it’s important to have the vehicle regularly inspected and looked at.

Maybe you can’t see any major damage to the sensors, but they still need to be replaced. Someone qualified to work with these advanced safety systems will know what’s going on.

4. A defective sensor or camera

It’s possible for the sensors or camera to fail prematurely or for no reason at all. The sensor may fail without your knowledge, even if you take care of it.

If the sensor or camera detects collisions that aren’t there or it fails and sends you a dashboard message, you want to have it looked at. It is important to repair it immediately to ensure safety.

5. Software Failure

Sometimes it’s not the sensor that has failed but the software running it. Software that runs the FCW system is susceptible to failing.

Some automakers will provide an updated to remedy the situation. If it is not, the program will have to change.

6. Injuries

Damage to the FCW can lead to it failing. If you’ve been in an accident, the sensors might have sustained damage that renders them inoperable.

It’s important to have the vehicle looked at after any collision, no matter how small it is. You can go back to work once you have received the OK from your mechanic.

Is the FCW Sensor located?

There are different locations for FCW sensors on every make and model. You will find them in the front, as this is the place where collisions take place.

These sensors are located near the grille or the headlights. Cameras that are part of the system might be located near or on the windshield. You can get more information from the owner’s manual.

What if the FCW System failed to deliver a message?

We’ve discussed how important the FCW system is to your on-road safety. It can fail, and you risk putting your passengers as well as yourself in danger. You won’t be alerted if there’s a possible collision up ahead, leaving you on your own to navigate the road.

While you can drive without the FCW system working, it’s best not to. It is best to have the FCW system repaired as soon as possible in order to protect everyone. But we understand that it might be necessary to drive some distance to get there. Take your time as you drive unprotected.

Honda FCW System Reset/Recalibration

FCW System Reset

Professionals with sophisticated scanners are required to reset advanced safety systems. Most code scanners aren’t able to reset the system and it can’t be done from the vehicle itself.

To turn the warning light off, the mechanic will use his calibrated tools. Once the problem is resolved, the light shouldn’t come back on.

Some suggested that you reset the ECU so it can restart itself. For thirty minutes, you can disconnect the battery. However, we don’t recommend this method because of the inconvenience it can cause with other systems in your vehicle.

FCW System Recalibration

If you’ve had your windshield replaced or a front body part put on, you might need to have the FCW system camera recalibrated. The system can be re-calibrated using static or dynamic camera aiming. The professional shops are the ones who do this.

Specific targets must be identified by the camera according to factory instructions. Auto repair shops will apply the parking brake, turn off all DRLs and lights before turning on the engine. It must also be done in a garage where natural light sources aren’t interfering.

Repairing the FCW System

The extent of the FCW failure will determine how much it costs. You may spend only $75 to clean the sensor. Major failures can quickly cost you up to $1500. This isn’t a cheap system to work with.

It doesn't matter what caused it, the make and model also affects its price. It might be cheaper to fix a cheap car than if it were a more expensive model. Some luxury brands also require specialist mechanics for these types of repairs. To work on the vehicle you have, it is best to go to a dealership that has been certified.

You might be able repair the problem yourself in some instances if the equipment is right. But the cost of the scanner to calibrate or reset your system is high and this equipment isn't something that most home mechanics can afford. You might consider visiting a local repair shop to save your money.

Questions about the FCW System

My FCW light is on.

Your forward collision warning system may be causing your FCW warning lamp to turn on. You will need to use a code scanner to scan trouble codes and then continue troubleshooting.

Is the FCW sensor in your area?

The FCW sensor is either a camera placed on top of the car’s windshield, or a radar sensor placed behind the lower grille in the front of the car. This depends on which car you drive, and what type of FCW system it uses.

Are you able to disable the FCW System

Yes, you can turn off the FCW (forward collision warning) system if you’d like. For two seconds, press and hold down the FCW OFF switch located on the instrument panel. If you can’t find the button, check your owner’s manual. You will receive no visual or audible alerts when the FCW system has been turned off.

What car models are compatible with the FCW System

There are many car brands with different types of radar collision systems, but the FCW (Forward-Collision Warning) System is Honda’s system. This means you will find the FCW system in most modern honda vehicles and you can also find it in other brands that use Honda’s system.
