What number of tons do you need?

It’s one of the most important questions you need to answer because if you don’t get a large enough floor jack then you’ll never get your vehicle off the ground. What is the best way to determine how many tons of jack you will need?

The weight of a ton is 2,000 lbs, which means that a 3-ton crane can lift up to 6,500 pounds. However, if you think that means your vehicle needs to weigh less than 6,000 pounds for the jack to work, you’re wrong.

That’s because at most the vehicle jack only lifts half of your vehicle at once. But keep in mind that most of a vehicle’s weight is where the engine is. In most vehicles this is at the front of the engine, but that’s not always the case.

Still, to be safe, you should take your vehicle’s weight and take two-thirds of it to determine how many tons you need. So, if you have a vehicle that weighs 9,000 pounds, you’ll need at least a 3-ton jack to lift it.

A Ford F-350 is 7,737 pounds when it's at its largest configuration. Therefore, a 3-ton truck jack should be sufficient for most commercial vehicles. A 2-ton jack could work well with bigger commercial vehicles.

Which size floor jack do you need?

When you’re lifting a vehicle you want to lift it as little off the ground as possible to get the job done. It will ensure that the vehicle is at a low angle, creating a safer work environment.

Still, you need enough space to get the jack underneath the vehicle, and it needs to raise itself up enough to get the vehicle’s wheels off the ground. You will need to measure.

Don’t get underneath the vehicle while you’re lifting it, and as soon as it’s at the necessary height install jack stands. During this step, stay as far away as you can from the vehicle. After the jack supports are installed, keep your feet on the ground and lower the vehicle slowly onto the jack stand.

After the vehicle has been placed on the jack stand, lower the floorjack so that it is just inches away from the lifting point. Double-check to ensure the vehicle remains securely attached to the jack stand. Give the vehicle some pushes until it is completely on its feet.

If the vehicle passes this test, you’re ready to work on your vehicle! As long as you’ve set everything up correctly and keep your wheel chocks in place, you’re safe to work underneath of the vehicle. Just keep in mind that it’s always best to avoid going underneath a lifted vehicle as much as possible – even if it’s on jack stands.
